The House of Representatives established in 1938 the notorious Committee on Un-American Activities, which sought to harass communists, as did the Smith Act of 1940. While “red scares” gradually weakened popular support for Marxist movements, finally putting the Communist Party out of action in the mid-1950s, it was the Hitler–Stalin Non-Aggression Pact of 1939 that most dramatically damaged left-wing politics. The specter of a jingoistic deal between fascists and communists undermined the widespread support for and the prestige of leftist parties and policies.

This prophetic stance was adopted by Max Eastman in the mid-1920s and a decade later by the New York Intellectuals. Author and editor of seventeen books, including texts on sex, marriage, and women’s liberation, Calverton pioneered Marxist literary theory and criticism in America with The Newer Spirit (1925), The New Grounds of Criticism (1930), and his major work, The Liberation of American Literature. Never forswearing his ecumenism, Calverton remained an independent Marxist until his early death in 1940, maintaining his dream of a united front of all radicals against capitalism and facism.

Their belief in the common man was a belief in him as a petty bourgeois individualist; our belief must be in him as proletarian collectivist. In that belief lies the ultimate liberation of American literature—and American life” (480). Here the thrust of Calverton’s pioneer project became fully evident; he wanted to move from the American literary past into the social future (without forgetting the past) and to make the future a time of liberation in American life and literature. Since the socioeconomic movement of history, in his view, was from the aristocracy to the middle class to the proletariat, Calverton recommended joining the proletariat.
