Thus, an atheist cannot perform the same act as a believer, even if an outside observer cannot tell the difference. " Isaiah sees that God is acting through Assyria to punish Israel. If the king of Assyria had known he was Page 5 helping Israel's God, presumably he would have ceased to act. That was not the act he wanted to perform. Will Assyria be rewarded for its (unintended) cooperation with Yahweh? No, "I will punish the utterance of the king of Assyria's proud heart" (Is 10:612). God punishes Assyria for the deed it was performing, a hostile act against God's people.
28 That is what I have tried to provide, since "where there is no vision, the people perish" (Pry 29:18). I want to thank the Society of Jesus, the Association of Theological Schools, the Outboard Marine Company, and Thomas Beeler for grants Page xvii that made completion of this project possible. I also thank Weston School of Theology for sabbatical time and for the many excellent personnel and resources it made available to me. I particularly want to thank many friends without whose personal support and often considerable editorial help this project could not have been completed, especially Margaret Causey, Lucretia Yaghjian, Tom and Jennifer Beeler, Randy and Anne Sutherland Howard, Maureen Donohue, Howard Gray, John Haughey, Stephen Pope, Julie Bowen, my students, and many Jesuit colleagues who encouraged me while I lived with them in Cambridge, Santa Clara, Berkeley, and Manila.

" 45 Out of the fullness of a good heart flows morally good deeds (Lk 6:45). This is true for individual and social life. As Daniel Maguire observes, "Good social changes are always rooted in affection, though they may find their immediate stimulus in a variety of events. 47 The affections are in themselves morally valuable, quite apart from whether they lead to any deeds.
