One could subsume several of these subjects under the rubric of an increased emphasis on style and a concomitant positive regard for Chaucer's use of literary conventions. His debt to formal rhetoric was considered — but minimized — by Manly (361), while others set about collecting examples of rhetorical figures. Language, versification, and manuscript relations continued to be studied. An awareness of oral performance and its influence on the text occasionally appeared, with Bronson writing about Chaucer's responsiveness to a listening audience (176) and Everett writing about his 'good ear' (237).

This version 'is in no sense an attempt at a critical text' (p vi); for Manly's critical text see the Manly-Rickert edition (49). The basis here is the Ellesmere ms only, with minimal corrections. Many of Manly's characteristic viewpoints about GP appear here in the introduction or notes — for example, the possibility that Chaucer expanded, rather than reduced, his overall plan, since 'the Prologue contained some of Chaucer's latest work' (p 68); the absurdity of three priests accompanying the Prioress; and the likelihood that there were historical models for at least some of the pilgrims.
