CLASSROOM COMMUNICATION OBSERVED There are many kinds of observational educational research, and that in which I have been involved should not be taken as typical in its aims or analytic procedures. ) Its methods are qualitative, not quantitative. That is, our observations and analysis do not yield numerical data of any kind. Instead, our method is to use the complete corpus of communicative interchanges in the classrooms we observe as data, and to analyse that data to draw conclusions about the nature and quality of the educational process taking place.

One project which has investigated the potential of Logo for teaching mathematics and has taken into account the role of the teacher as well as pupils working collaboratively is the Logo maths project (Hoyles and Sutherland, 1989). The main focus of this project was to discover whether, and in what circumstances, Logo could facilitate pupils’ understanding of mathematics. The researchers found that it was possible for pupils to have more involvement in, and take more control over, their mathematical learning, provided particular conditions were met, which included the opportunity for pupils to work collaboratively with the computer.
